ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – An international conference that has served as a platform for Kurdistan Region’s oil and gas industry has been postponed at the request of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).
Amid continued fallout between Baghdad and Erbil, the KRG’s oil ministry has announced it cannot support the CWC Kurdistan-Iraq Oil and Gas conference.
The Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) cited "logistical and other circumstances affecting the Kurdistan Region" for their request to reschedule the conference.
The ministry suggested that CWC postpone the conference to the first quarter of 2018, according to a statement on Tuesday.
CWC has announced the conference will be postponed with new dates and venue to be announced shortly.
The conference originally was planned for later this year in London, but no date had officially ever been set.
The CWC Group is an events and training producer for the oil, gas, and infrastructure industries.
The Kurdistan Region economy is heavily dependent on energy production. Much of Kurdistan's oil is exported to world markets through a pipeline which terminates at the Turkish port of Ceyhan.
The central government over the past month has taken control of all production facilities in the disputed or Kurdistani areas, which are claimed by both Baghdad and Erbil, and demanded the KRG turn over all its oil revenues to the central government. Erbil has stated it would do so if Baghdad gives the Region its 17 percent share of the federal budget. The current draft of the 2018 budget, which has received preliminary approval, allocates just 12.67 percent to the Kurdistan Region.
