EBRIL, Kurdistan Region - Kurdistan Region president and prime minister and the Iraqi foreign ministry on Thursday expressed condolences to the United States after a plane and helicopter recently collided near Washington DC, which resulted in dozens of fatalities.
“I am deeply saddened by the tragic plane crash in Washington, D.C. My heartfelt condolences go out to the families and loved ones affected by this devastating incident,” said President Nechirvan Barzani on X.
A Bombardier jet late Wednesday evening operated by an American Airlines subsidiary crashed into the river near Reagan National Airport while attempting to land in the busy airspace. The aircraft, carrying 64 people, collided with a US Army Blackhawk helicopter, which had three soldiers aboard. Wreckage from the jet was visible above the water as emergency vessels and diving teams responded to the scene.
US President Donald Trump said during a press briefing on Thursday that all 67 people were killed in the incident.
“Sadly, there are no survivors,” he said, adding “Really, we are in mourning.”
Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani also expressed condolences.
“My thoughts are with the victims and their families and I wish a speedy recovery for the injured,” he said in a post on X.
The Iraqi foreign ministry also expressed its “sincere condolences” to the US over the tragic incident.
“Sadly, there are no survivors,” US President Donald Trump said during a press briefing on Thursday. He confirmed the death of all those aboard the aircrafts, totaling 67 casualties.
“Really, we are in mourning,” he said.
“The ministry affirms the Republic of Iraq's full solidarity with the United States of America, government and people, expressing its sincere condolences and sympathies to the families and relatives of the victims,” the ministry statement added.
