ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Lebanon’s prime minister said on Thursday that he hopes a 21-day ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah proposed by the United States and France will be implemented.
"We are looking to be implemented as soon as possible,” Najib Mikati told Rudaw’s Diyar Kurda on the sidelines of the United States General Assembly in New York.
The ceasefire, which has been rejected by Israel, is endorsed by regional and Western countries, according to a joint statement from US President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday.
“It is time for a settlement on the Israel-Lebanon border that ensures safety and security to enable civilians to return to their homes,” the statement read. “We call for broad endorsement and for the immediate support of the Governments of Israel and Lebanon.”
Israel continues its bombardment of southern Lebanon on the grounds of targeting Hezbollah targets.
The Lebanese health ministry has said nearly 700 people have been killed in Lebanon this week.
The Iran-backed Lebanese Hezbollah movement has exchanged cross-border fire with Israel since Hamas attacked southern Israel in October last year.
