Trump reaffirms strategic US-Turkish relationship with Erdogan

“Noting the strategic partnership between the USA and Turkey, both leaders reaffirmed their shared commitment on the development of bilateral cooperation in all fields including defense and military relations in the future,” read a statement from the Turkish presidency. 
 
They also discussed Manbij roadmap and the fight against terrorism.
 
Erdogan said both leaders will meet during Brussels NATO Summit from July 11-12.

The White House released a readout of the call late on Tuesday.

 

Trump spoke with Erdogan "to congratulate him on his reelection and to reaffirm strong bonds" between the "NATO allies and strategic partners."

 

"President Trump and President Erdogan recommitted to efforts to resolve issues in the bilateral relationship and to increase cooperation in addressing shared strategic challenges," it added.

Erdogan has now been congratulated by the leaders of all permanent members of the UN Security Council: the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, France, China, and additionally by Germany.

 

Erdogan secured 52.38 percent of the presidential election on Sunday, according to results released by state-run Anadolu Agency. His AKP party won 295 seats. Together with the Nationalist Movement Party's (MHP) 67 seats, as a part of the People's Alliance, they will control the majority of the Grand National Assembly's 600 seats.

"The Prime Minister reiterated the importance of the bilateral relationship between the UK and Turkey and expressed her desire to continue working in partnership with President Erdogan and his government on our shared priorities including security cooperation, trade and investment, the situation in Syria and supporting a political settlement in Cyprus," read a statement from 10 Downing Street.

 

Russian President Vladimir Putin

"The presidents confirmed their mutual interest in expanding partnership between the two countries and noted as priorities joint strategic energy projects, including the construction of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant and the TurkStream pipeline," read a Kremlin statement.

 

"President Putin and President Erdogan agreed to maintain close cooperation in the Syrian conflict resolution."

 

French President Macron

"The French president has congratulated Recep Tayyip Erdogan and wished the Turkish people success in the economic and social development of their country and in the democratic functioning of their institutions," an Elysee Palace source told Reuters.

 

German Chancellor Angela Merkel

"For your re-election, I send my congratulations. Germany and Turkey together have a long-standing friendship. Our diverse bilateral relations are demonstrated by intensive exchange and close personal ties between our citizens," read a letter from the chancellor's office.

 

"The upheavals in the Middle East and resulting migration affect our two states conserably. All the more we want to be partners with a stable and pluralistic Turkey in which democratic participation and respect for the rule of law are strengthened."

 

Chinese Foreign Ministry

"China always attaches great importance to its relations with Turkey. Over the recent years, under the guidance of the two heads of state, the bilateral relations and across-the-board cooperation between the two countries have moved ahead and achieved many positive outcomes. China stands ready to work with Turkey to promote greater development of the China-Turkey strategic cooperative relationship for the benefit of the two countries and peoples."
