One killed, several injured in knife attack during Newroz event in southern Germany

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - One person was killed and several others injured during a knife altercation at a Kurdish New Year, Newroz, celebration in Parsberg, a town in southern Germany's Bavaria, local police said.

Rudaw’s Znar Shino, reporting from Dusseldorf, said that the suspect and the victim were acquaintances who had a longstanding dispute. The suspect, believed to be around 50 years old, reportedly entered the celebration and fatally stabbed the victim, a father of two. Several others were reportedly injured in the altercation as well.

The incident took place during a Newroz gathering attended by hundreds of people. Police announced on Sunday that a suspect had been arrested.

German newspaper Bild reported on Sunday that the attacker attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended shortly afterward. According to the outlet, around 800 people were attending the event. Bild also reported that the suspect and the victim knew each other. Authorities have not yet disclosed details on the motive behind the attack.

The fatal incident notably occurred as thousands of Kurds gathered in the German city of Cologne over the weekend to mark what organizers described as the largest Newroz celebration in Europe. The latter event concluded without any incidents.
