ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - US Vice President Kamala Harris announced on Sunday that she will seek the Democratic nomination for the presidency following the withdrawal of President Joe Biden from the race and his endorsement of her.

“I am honored to have the President’s endorsement and my intention is to earn and win this nomination,” Harris said in a statement on X.

"I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party - and unite our nation - to defeat Donald Trump," she added.

Harris also praised Biden for his tenure: “His remarkable legacy of accomplishment is unmatched in modern American history, surpassing the legacy of many presidents who have served two terms in office.”

In a statement on Sunday, Biden announced his withdrawal from the race. He then endorsed Harris to be the Democratic candidate.

Following Biden’s announcement, scores of Democratic donors, officials, and former presidents announced their endorsement of Harris to stand against former President Donald Trump, who accepted the Republican nomination for president last week in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, days after an assassination attempt.

Trump criticized the Biden-Harris administration on social media Sunday.

"Crooked Joe Biden was not fit to run for President, and is certainly not fit to serve - And never was! He only attained the position of President by lies, Fake News, and not leaving his Basement. All those around him, including his Doctor and the Media, knew that he wasn’t capable of being President, and he wasn’t..." the former president wrote.

The United States will hold its 2024 election on November 5. The next presidential inauguration is scheduled to be on January 20, 2025.

Despite the endorsements, Harris still has to win the votes of party delegates during a party convention in Chicago, Illinois, in August.

If Harris wins, she would be the first woman to be president in the United States.
