Story of a Kurdish survivor of London’s Grenfell tower fire

LONDON, United Kingdom – Four Kurdish families were living in the London apartment tower that was engulfed in a deadly fire on Wednesday. Two of the families survived while the fate of the other two is still unknown.

Giti Hassan, originally from Sina in the Kurdistan area of Iran, escaped the fire and watched her home of 20 years burn.

“I and my children came to this country as refugees. We created a life for ourselves. We were very happy for the house which had been given to us. We were very satisfied. My children grew up here. We had memories. We built a life altogether. I suffered and worked very hard for years. But everything was burned in a few minutes,” she said.

58 people are missing and presumed dead in the fire. The death toll is likely to rise.

Giti Hassan’s family has started an online fundraising campaign for her and her children.
