France's Macron says Kurdistan Region an ‘important partner’
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday said the Kurdistan Region is an “important partner” of France and that he has strong relations with the Kurdish leadership.
Macron told Rudaw’s Alla Shally in Munich that his meeting with the Kurdistan Region’s Prime Minister Masrour Barzani in Paris on Thursday was “a very good meeting as always,” adding that "Kurdistan Region for us is an important partner in terms of security [and] stability."
Macron also said that he has a strong relationship with the Kurdish leadership.
Macron on Thursday received Prime Minister Barzani at Elysee Palace where they discussed a range of topics, including trade and security.
“France is an ally with a common vision; enhancing our region and the security of Europe,” Barzani said in a tweet after their meeting.
The Kurdistan Region and France enjoy good ties. Macron landed in Erbil in August 2021, following a trip to Baghdad where he attended a regional summit that brought nine Middle Eastern countries together.
“I miss Erbil,” the French leader told Rudaw on Friday.
France was one of the first countries to open a consulate in the Kurdish capital of Erbil after the fall of Saddam Hussein’s regime in 2003 and played a critical role in helping Kurds both in Iraq and in Syria in the war against ISIS, including in supplying arms and training to the Kurdish forces.
