Kurdish delegation attending Munich Security Conference
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – KRG Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani has arrived in Germany where he will participate in the Munich Security Conference taking place this weekend.
Masrour Barzani, Kurdistan Region Security Council Chancellor, will also attend.
The 2018 edition of the annual conference will focus on the role of the European Union on the world stage, in particular its relations with Russia and the United States.
World leaders and security officials will also discuss the “numerous” Middle Eastern conflicts, according to the website of the event.
“Last year, the world came much too close to the brink of a significant conflict,” Wolfgang Ischinger, chairman of the conference said.
“The escalating rhetoric of individual decision-makers is a very disconcerting development. Whether on the Korean peninsula, in the Persian Gulf or in Eastern Europe – just a single wrong decision taken in this charged situation could quickly trigger a dangerous chain reaction,” he explained.
The goal of the conference is to encourage dialogue between parties.
Attendees include UN chief Antonio Guterres, head of NATO Jens Stoltenberg, US Defense Secretary James Mattis, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, and the foreign ministers of Iran, Russia, and Turkey.
Former Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani has attended the conference in previous years.
