'Every American should be here': New Yorkers on Black Lives Matter protests
NEW YORK, United States — Protests continue across the United States almost three weeks after the killing of George Floyd, an unarmed black American at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer.
Demonstrations denouncing racism and police brutality have taken place across nearly 750 cities and towns across the US after Floyd, 46 and a father-of-two, was suffocated to death during his arrest over an alleged counterfeit $20 bill on May 25.
His death is the latest in a line of black Americans killed by police forces. 26-year-old Breonna Taylor was fatally shot by police officers in Louisville, Kentucky, on March 13, and has become another symbol of the protests.
“I do this for all those who have no family, who the system corrupted, who the police beat, stomped on… some of them got killed. Somebody's got to stand up,” one protester in New York City told Rudaw on June 2.
"Every American should be here because it’s about justice and injustice... it’s been happening for too long. We need change," another demonstrator added.
