ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The United States on Friday announced new sanctions on a company allegedly involved in chemical weapon research in Iran.
The sanctions target Hakiman Shargh Research Company “for engaging or attempting to engage in activities or transactions that materially contribute to the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction by Iran,” read a statement from US Department of State spokesperson Matthew Miller.
Iran currently sits on the executive council of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, which implements the global Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), but the US accuses it of violating that convention.
“Since 2018, the United States has assessed Iran as being in noncompliance with the CWC for its failure to fully declare its chemical weapons-related activities and facilities, and in 2024, the United States further assessed that Iran has violated the CWC due to its development of pharmaceutical-based agents as part of a chemical weapons program,” read the statement from Miller.
Iran, which was the victim of chemical weapons used by Iraq during the war in the 1980s, has not immediately commented on the new sanctions.
