Zelenskyy to visit Turkey on Friday, meet with Erdogan
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to visit Istanbul on Friday for a meeting with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan, reported Turkish state media.
They will meet in Istanbul to discuss Ankara-Kyiv relations as well as the latest regional and international developments, according to Anadolu Agency.
The visit comes as clashes between Ukrainian and Russian forces have escalated in recent days. Russia launched an invasion of Ukraine in February last year and has taken control of areas in the southeast.
Turkey has acted as a mediator between the warring countries as Erdogan has maintained good relations with both Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The United Nations and Turkey brokered a deal between Russia and Ukraine in July last year that allowed for the resumption of exports of Ukrainian grain and other foodstuffs for the first time since the start of the war.
Zelenskyy’s trip to Turkey comes days before the annual meeting of NATO, whose members have supplied Kyiv with weapons.
