ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Hassan, an 18-years-old Kurd from northeast Syria (Rojava), was stabbed to death on New Year’s Eve in a village in the Netherlands, and his family told Rudaw that their son was repeatedly threatened by the suspect in the past.

Hassan’s family migrated out of Rojava’s Afrin six years ago due to the ongoing war in the country, and have been residing in the Netherlands since.

“Over two years ago, he [suspect] wounded Hassan’s hand. I filed a complaint against him and he received his punishment. After receiving the punishment, he was constantly telling Hassan: I will kill you,” Yasamin Hanan, Hassan’s mother, told Rudaw adding “I knew and Hassan’s friends knew. But I never understood why, if the police knew he was a criminal and making threats, why did they allow him to be free?”

The family says they had alerted the police that Hassan was being threatened, but they did not help in any way.

“When his mother said that he was a threat on her son’s life and other people, the police replied saying: we cannot help you. All they did was put an ankle monitor on him” said Jwan Mahmoud, a family relative.

The suspect has been arrested since the day of the incident, but the police is yet to provide additional information on the case.

Hassan’s body will be laid to rest on Friday.
