ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Kurdish administration in northeast Syria condemned a New Year terror attack in New Orleans by a United States army veteran who American officials said had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (ISIS).

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the people and government of the United States and wish the injured a swift recovery. This tragedy highlights that the fight against terrorism is far from over,” Elham Ahmad, foreign relations co-chair for the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, said in a post on X.

Early on January 1, a pick-up truck rammed into a crowd celebrating the New Year in New Orleans, killing 14 people and injuring 35.

The FBI identified the perpetrator as Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar. In the hours before the attack, Jabbar posted several videos online in which “he stated he had joined ISIS,” FBI Deputy Assistant Director Christopher Raia said on Thursday.

Authorities also discovered an ISIS flag in the back of the truck.

“Let us be very clear - what happened here in New Orleans was an act of terrorism. It was premeditated and an evil act,” said Raia.

Jabbar was fatally shot in a firefight with police.

Kurdish-led forces in northeast Syria (Rojava) are key allies of the United States-led international coalition against ISIS.

Ahmad said it is now time to “strengthen this partnership and expand it into political and economic dimensions to address and eliminate all sources of terrorism.”
