ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A young Kurdish-German woman competed on the Voice Germany, attracting millions of listeners with her unique style and voice.
"I used to only sing in school, but my first singing experience was on a show that had a million viewers," Iman Rashay told Rudaw on Friday.
Rashay is in her second year of nursing studies, which she loves, but says music is her passion. Her voice is very powerful, singing different genres from opera to metal.
“I did not choose the songs I sang on the Voice Germany. My style is more soul and RnB. Because they wanted to challenge me, they always gave me rock, up-tempo music, opera, and metal. I personally did not like it, but I like a challenge,” she said.
She comes from a family of artists. Her father, who is also a singer, moved to Germany in the 1990s. The young artist said that although she was born in Germany, she knows how to read and write Kurdish well.
“I live in Cologne, I was born here. I am originally from Erbil. My father Badirkhan Salih came to Germany in the 90s. He is also an artist and like my uncle Kamaran Salih, he is a singer,” she added, “I was raised in a family of artists, and love music. I am also a singer now.”
“I will continue my art and I want to serve my nation through my art,” she added.
The Voice is an international reality TV singing competition, featuring four judges looking for new talented singers. Rashay did not win the competition but gained a lot of attention in Germany for her powerful talent. She says she has millions of views online and they keep increasing.
