Babil, or Babylon, represents an ancient Iraqi civilization dating back to 4,000 years.
The ancient site is now attracting tourists. Home of the Ishtar Gate, Tower of Babil, and Hanging Gardens, it was once most of the splendid cities built by King Nebuchadnezzar II.
Many of the historic sites and relics have been excavated or preserved in museums outside the country. Artifacts have also shown up in the black market.
With partial reconstruction efforts underway, Iraqis and tourists are able to learn of their diverse and significant history through the ages.
