ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kawa Rekani, owner of First Iraqi Bank (FIB), was awarded the Murex d'Or award for leading businessperson in the Arab world on Sunday.

Rekani, the creator of the first fully digital bank in Iraq, told Rudaw that he was the sole recipient of the 2023 Murex d'Or who was not in the domain of art.

Created in 2000, the Murex d’Or is a Lebanese award recognizing achievements in arts in Arab countries and the rest of the world. In addition to arts, the ceremony also honors one businessperson per year for their innovations in their relevant fields.

FIB’s service is based on an application that acts as a mobile wallet and can be downloaded by customers on both IOS and android devices, allowing to transfer money from one mobile phone to another 24 hours a day.

The Iraqi banking system riddled with bureaucracy only allows for citizens to open bank accounts in person and only after offering documents and going through a cumbersome process. However, Rekani who has been active in the telecommunication and banking system for over two decades believes that this new method would do away with the red tape.
