The Korowai: a window into the past

The island of Papua consists of two regions, one under Indonesian control and another functioning as an independent nation. The side under Indonesian control has been fighting for freedom for decades through efforts spearheaded by the Papua Freedom Organization, an armed group engaged in a guerrilla war against Indonesian forces. This documentary follows the story of the Korowai tribe, one of the 312 tribes inhabiting the rainforest covering vast swathes of the Indonesian Papua region.

From airport to airport, from the shores of the Brazza River to the Papuan rainforest, Rudaw sets out to shed light on the lifestyle of the Korowai tribe, from treehouse living, to married life, to spiritual beliefs, discovering an amusing linguistic similarity between the Korowai language and Kurdish: the use of the word "Kaka".
