URMIA, Iran – Kurdish nomads continue an ancient way of life in Urmia in Iran’s West Azerbaijan province, travelling with their herds around the isolated mountain region which straddles the shared border with Turkey and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

Some 15,000 nomadic families move around the region’s rich grazing land, pitching their tents as they go.

Summer is the season for sheep shearing. However, the Iranian government strictly controls where the families are allowed to live and heard their animals, determined to stop livestock crossing international frontiers.

The nomads live largely unhindered by these rules.
