High-ranking PUK official wants to make Kurdistan 'green'

SULAIMANI, Kurdistan Region — This man known mostly for politics has planted tens of gardens in Sulaimani and Hawraman.

Jameel Hawrami was born in Tawela on the Iraq-Iran border in 1951. He is a leading member in the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK). He has planted thousands of trees on both sides of Qalachwalan-Sulaimani main road. He recalls speaking for former PUK leader and president of Iraq, the late Jalal Talabani, aka Mam Jala, about his efforts.

Hawrami doesn’t want to give up. He wants the environment to be green. He always thinks about ways to green more lands of the Kurdistan Region.

Hawrami believes that no special research has been conducted regarding the land and environment of Kurdistan, and that the government should prioritize planting trees,

“I ask the President and the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region to issue instructions or pass a law from the parliament to distribute the lands which are arid and dry to people on the condition of planting Pistachio trees on them.” Hawrami told Rudaw.

Hawrami also had a great hand in plating the Azadi Park in the Sulaimani city center. He was given the position of supervising the plantation of the garden there by Mam Jalal.

Hawrami has planted thousands of trees on Sulaimani-Hawraman main road. He has future plans to further green the area.

Karwan is a gardener who learned all his skills from Hawrami. He works in Hawrami’s garden.

“All the skills I have learned are from Mr. Jamil Hawrami. All the designs of these trees belong to Mr. Jamil,” Karwan told Rudaw.
