KARACAOREN, Turkey - Descendants of German refugees in Turkey live peacefully among their Muslim neighbours.
Agust Albuk, a descendant of Germans who fought for the Ottomans in the 19th century Russo-Turkish war lives with his wife, who is a Turkish Muslim, in an Alevi village.
Born and raised in Turkey without German citizenship, Albuk nevertheless considers himself as German. His last uncle left for the country in 1982, where he received citizenship.
Albuk and his wife Yadigar celebrate both Christian and Islamic holidays with their three children.
"Having two religions and cultures in a house makes our lives colorful," Yadigar told Rudaw.
Despite connections to Europe, the family are reluctant to move to Germany.
"On the one hand, we think that Europe's ecomomy is better. One the other hand, we cannot easily adapt to their culture at this age, even if we manage to learn the language," Albuk told Rudaw.
