ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Over 50 aftershocks, including one of 5.9 magnitude, followed a powerful 6.2-magnitude earthquake that struck the Sea of Marmara near Istanbul on Wednesday, the interior minister said.

“As of 15:12, 51 aftershocks, the largest of which was 5.9 magnitude, were recorded,” Ali Yerlikaya said on X, adding that the 6.2-magnitude quake “was approximately 7 km deep and lasted for a total of 13 seconds.”

“According to the scans done so far, there is no collapse of a building with a resident inside. Our scans are continuing,” he added.

The state-owned Anadolu Agency reported that the quake’s epicenter was located in Istanbul’s Silivri district.

At least 151 people sustained mild injuries due to the quakes, according to the Istanbul governor’s office, saying that they were injured “by jumping from high places due to panic.”

“Our citizens are advised not to enter buildings damaged or thought to be damaged by earthquakes,” Governor Davut Gul said.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he was “following the developments closely.”

Abdulkadir Uraloglu, the transport and infrastructure minister, confirmed that there was “no damage or negative situation” to the highways, trains, and the metro.
