The villagers of Aktoprak in the Kurdish province of Bingol, eastern Turkey wake up early in the morning to gather mulberries.

They stretch lengths of cloth beneath mulberry trees to collect the fruit, later turning them into molasses.

Mulberries have already become synonymous with the province, but local government is planning to apply for a Turkish patent to register mulberry molasses as an official province symbol.

Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry Burhan Bahadir told Anadolu Agency (AA) that this could increase the price of the produced molasses and positively impact Bingol's economy.

30 kilograms of molasses (66 pounds) could be produced from 150 kilograms (331 pounds) of mulberries, according to villager Nihat Durson.
