5.9 magnitude earthquake rocks southern Turkey
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A 5.9 magnitude earthquake rocked Turkey’s southern Malatya province on Wednesday, the country’s disaster management agency announced. The tremor of the quake was felt in neighboring Syria.
Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) announced on X that the quake took place around 10:40 am local time, saying its epicenter was Malatya province’s Kale district.
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said on X that the ministry is “closely monitoring the developments of the quake.”
The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) recorded the quake as a 6.0 magnitude.
No casualties have been immediately reported.
Syrian state media SANA reported that citizens from the Hasaka, Aleppo, and Deir ez-Zor provinces felt the quake.
Malatya was one of Turkey’s 11 provinces that suffered from a deadly earthquake in February 2023 that killed over 50,000 people.
