Kurdish-German singer convicted on terror charge in Turkey

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – A Kurdish-German singer has been sentenced to six years and three months in prison on terror charges in Turkey.

Hozan Cane, whose real name is Saide Inac, was sentenced in Edirne on Wednesday, her lawyer Mustafa Pekoz said, AFP reported.

Cane was arrested in June on charges of ties with the PKK.

She was in the country to support the election campaign of the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) and shared photos and videos of her on the campaign trail.

She was convicted of membership in a terror organization.

The charges appear to stem from her involvement in a documentary about the Yezidi genocide.

The court case was based on photographs of her with fighters of Kurdish armed forces the People’s Protection Units (YPG). Her family said the photos were from the film, AFP reported.

Cane intends to appeal the conviction.
