Turkish soldier killed in PKK missile strike: reports
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – The Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) killed one Turkish soldier and injured three in a missile attack near the Turkey-Kurdistan Region on Sunday, according to Turkish media.
A guided missile was fired from the Kurdistan Region side of the border, Hurriyet Daily News reported, citing security officials.
The attack targeted Turkish soldiers in Cukurca, Hakkari province, reported DHA.
One soldier was hit by shrapnel and was killed while three others were lightly injured.
The PKK has not immediately commented on the incident.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the founding of the PKK, which has been engaged in on-and-off conflict with the Turkish state for more than three decades, calling for greater national and cultural rights for millions of Kurds in Turkey.
The group is headquartered in Kurdistan Region’s Qandil Mountains.
Ankara, the United States, and European Union consider the PKK a terrorist group.
At least 3,343 people have been killed since clashes resumed in July 2015 following peace talks.
