ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - One person was killed and several others injured when a cable car collapsed in Turkey’s southern city of Antalya, authorities announced on Friday.
Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced on X that one person “lost his life and seven people were injured as a result of the collapse of one of the poles carrying the cable car line in Antalya’s Konyaalti.”
When the pole collapsed, one of the cabins plunged into a rocky area, according to Yerlikaya.
Seven helicopters, 543 rescue personnel, one military cargo plane, 108 vehicles, and six ambulances were deployed to the site of the incident to rescue people trapped inside the other 15 cabins of the cable car.
Yerlikaya announced on Saturday morning that 98 people who were trapped in the cabins have been rescued.
Turkish Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc announced that the Antalya chief prosecutor’s office is investigating the incident along with a group of experts appointed to determine what led to the collapse.
The leader of the opposition’s Republican People’s Party (CHP) announced that his party sent a group of parliament members to the scene to “investigate the details of the incident.”
