ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A Turkish court on Wednesday ruled for the release of a military analyst and opposition politician, who was previously arrested on espionage charges.
Arrested on November 29, Metin Gurcan faced life imprisonment and was found guilty of the charges of obtaining and disclosing state secrets for the purpose of political or military espionage. He has denied the accusations against him.
A court in Ankara ruled for Gurcan’s “release on judicial control and travel,” the pro-government Daily Sabah said on Wednesday.
Gurcan, 46, is a retired army officer and founding member of the opposition Democracy and Progress Party, or DEVA, led by Ali Babacan, a former deputy prime minister within President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling party.
He was arrested in his apartment.
"I am being detained on charges of political espionage. The police are at home... They are searching. I am shocked and I seek your help," Gurcan tweeted in November.
