ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Armed members of two families in the Kurdish-majority Adiyaman province in southern Turkey clashed on Friday, causing the deaths of seven people and the injury of three others, reported state media.
The incident took place in Doluca village and firearms were used by both families, according to Anadolu Agency.
“We hope that such incidents will not be repeated,” said governor Mahmut Cuhadar who visited Kahta Public Hospital to hear about the condition of the injured and meet with the relevant authorities, reported Anadolu.
The security forces found scores of shells at the scene, an indication of fierce fighting.
The cause of the incident and the dispute between the families is not clear. An investigation is underway.
Family feuds are common in southeast Turkey, especially in rural areas, which are more conservative. One of the deadliest feuds took place during a wedding in 2009 in Bilge village in the Kurdish-majority Mardin province. At least 44 people were killed, including the bride and groom.
