Former HDP lawmaker detained in Istanbul
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) on Wednesday said one of its former lawmakers was detained at Istanbul Airport while trying to travel abroad. Her detention is linked to the Kobane protests case, according to Turkish media.
The HDP said although Huda Kaya could recently be reached out all the time the security forces decided to detain her “arbitrarily and unlawfully” while she was trying to travel abroad via Istanbul Airport.
Zilan Leventoglu, Kaya’s lawyer, said in a post on the former lawmaker’s X (formerly Twitter) account that an arrest warrant was issued for her on September 27 but they had appealed it, adding that her client was always available to be contacted but she was detained 10 minutes before her plane took off.
Several Turkish media outlets reported that she is being held due to her alleged involvement in Kobane protests.
The case is trying about 108 people who they say took part in 2014 protests across Turkey - especially its Kurdish-majority southeast - against the Islamic State (ISIS) assault on the Syrian Kurdish town of Kobane. Over 30 people died when the protests turned violent.
The defendants, including former HDP co-chairs Selahattin Demirtas and Figen Yuksekdag, are on trial for scores of different alleged crimes, among them murder and “disrupting the unity and integrity of the state”.
