ERBIL, Kurdistan Region—A military curfew has been imposed in the Lice and Hani districts of Turkey’s largely Kurdish Diyarbakir province, the provincial governorate announced on Saturday.
The curfew has been imposed on eight villages in the Lice district: Birlik Köyü, Şenlik Köyü, Abalı Köyü, Erginköy Köyü, Tuzlaköy Köyü, Çeper Köyü, Duruköy Köyü, and Daralan Köyü; and five villages in the Hani district: Topçular Köyü, Yukarı Turalı Köyü, Kalaba Köyü, Serenköy Köyü, and Uzunlar Köyü.
It includes mountainous and forested areas where the governorate alleged terrorist organizations are carrying out activities and storing armaments.
The curfew came into effect 5am Saturday morning and will be in place until further notice.
Turkish security forces have imposed military curfews throughout the predominantly Kurdish southeast in its ongoing operations against the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).
In late August, a curfew imposed on six neighbourhoods in Sur, in Diyarbakir in December 2015 was lifted but journalists were prevented from entering the re-opened areas by security forces.
According to the International Crisis Group, which is monitoring the conflict and compiling data, 2,098 people have been killed in clashes between Turkish security forces and the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), including 338 civilians, since July 20, 2015.
