ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Two Syrian women were killed in al-Hol camp by members of the Islamic State (ISIS), the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced on Monday.

The siblings, aged 17 and 23, were killed by ISIS members in the camp, the SDF confirmed on Twitter.

The victims, named as Asma Amhed Khalaf and Ghufran Ahmed Khalaf by the North Press Agency (NPA), were killed in the fifth section of the camp, a security source told the news outlet.

The deaths come a week after the SDF arrested members of an ISIS “assassination squad” in the camp, which has seen numerous murders since the beginning of the year.

Al-Hol camp currently hosts just under 60,000 people. Most are family members of suspected ISIS fighters, including more than 8,500 foreign nationals. The SDF’s top commander Mazloum Abdi has called on foreign states to repatriate their nationals held in the camps in northeast Syria, also known as Rojava.

In March, the SDF launched a crackdown on ISIS members in the camp, arresting dozens of suspected members of the terrorist group.

During a summit in Rome on Monday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that the ongoing detention of former ISIS fighters in Iraq and Syria is unsustainable, arguing that they should be repatriated and rehabilitated.
