Displaced return to Qamishli’s al-Tai neighborhood following truce
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Displaced people in northeastern Syria’s (Rojava) Qamishli returned to their homes in a conflict-afflicted area following the announcement of a permanent truce between clashing Kurdish and pro-regime forces.
Video published by Internal Security Forces (Asayish) on Monday showed masses of people returning to al-Tai, one of several pockets of control that the regime had maintained in Qamishli that fell into the hands of Kurdish forces last week.
The return of people to the neighborhood came after the Asayish announced on Sunday that they had reached a permanent truce with the pro-regime National Defense Forces (NDF).
The Asayish flag was raised in the neighborhood on Monday, according to a video published by the force on facebook.
Negotiations mediated by Russia and the Kurdish led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) were held after clashes broke out last week between Asayish and NDF in Qamishli. At least three people were reported dead in the clashes.
On Sunday, Asayish said that they are committed to the truce, which was brokered by Russia, unless the NDF breaks it.
Asayish on Sunday said that people in the neighborhood, who left their homes due to the clashes, can return to their homes, after checking with the Asayish to ensure their safety.
"We in the Internal Security Forces of northern and eastern Syria, affirm that protecting the people is one of our duties and priorities, and that the people of al-Tai neighborhood are an essential part of the city of Qamishli.”
The main opposition group in Rojava, the Kurdish National Council (ENKS), had called for an end to hostilities, saying they have put the civilian population at risk: “Thousands of families were displaced from the neighborhood to safer places, and many civilians in the neighborhood and neighboring neighborhoods fell as martyrs and were injured by indiscriminate bombardments.”
