ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Kurdish-Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on Thursday called on the international community to further cooperate with the force in the fight against the Islamic State (ISIS), warning that the group poses an “imminent threat” to the region and world.
“The terrorist organization continues to pose an imminent threat to our regions and the world, primarily through its network of terrorist cells. Its objective is to rebuild its crumbling organization, revive its aspirations, regain control over certain territories, and threaten the lives of the local population,” said the US-backed force, celebrating the fourth anniversary of the defeat of ISIS in Baghouz which used to be one of the strongholds of the group.
It added that the attacks by ISIS in recent years and months “underscore the continuing danger it poses.”
“This calls for even greater cooperation from the international community, particularly the international coalition forces. There needs to be an increase in military support and security coordination that is commensurate with the level of the terrorist threat. We must work together to cut off the organization’s sources of funding and drain the enabling environment,” noted the multi-ethnic force.
ISIS controlled swathes of Syrian land in 2014 but it was territorially defeated by the SDF with aerial support from the anti-ISIS global coalition in 2019.
SDF has launched several operations against ISIS in recent months, arresting dozens of suspected members.
The Kurdish-led force temporarily halted anti-ISIS operations late November after Turkey launched a fresh aerial campaign. It has resumed military activities against the terror group, including joint patrols with the global coalition.
