Suspected Turkish drone targets Rojava Asayish base
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kurdish security forces (Asayish) in northeast Syria (Rojava) said a drone struck one of their bases on Thursday, causing material damage, but no casualties. They blamed Turkey.
“Turkey targeted one of our bases in Qamishli with a reconnaissance drone, causing damage to the building,” the Asayish said in a statement.
“This targeting is a psychological war against the people of the area, aiming to prevent our forces from carrying out their security duties and maintaining stability,” the statement added.
Ambulances rushed to the site following the attack “amid information about casualties,” according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a UK-based war monitor that relies on a network of sources within Syria.
Ankara frequently conducts air and drone strikes against Kurdish forces in northern Syria with alleged links to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), claiming that they pose a security threat. Since the beginning of this year, Turkey has carried out 92 such strikes, killing 29 people and injuring over 40 others, including children and women, according to data from SOHR.
On Wednesday, a suspected Turkish drone strike sparked a wildfire on Mount Qarachok near al-Malikiya (Derik). No casualties were reported.
