KNC head: I was arrested for political reasons

DUHOK, Kurdistan Region – The head of the Kurdish National Council (KNC, ENKS) was arrested by the Asayesh (Kurdish security forces) in Qamishli, Rojava, northern Syria on Saturday because of his political activities, he claimed to Rudaw.

“I think the reason for arresting [me] is our political activities, we as the KNC, our political activities,” Ibrahim Biro told Rudaw Sunday, after being released.

“The KNC is really doing a great job in Rojava and our people believe in our political movement,” Biro said.

He predicted that the leadership of the Democratic Union Party (PYD), the ruling political party in Rojava, will fail.

“They, on one hand, attack the leadership of the KNC and on the other hand attack the Kurdish flag and say bad things about Mr. President Barzani,” he said, referring to Masoud Barzani, president of the Kurdistan Regional Government.

On the same day that Biro was arrested, supporters of the PYD in Qamishli took down the Kurdish flag from the office of the Kurdish Union Party on the southern side of the city, according to information obtained by Rudaw.

Biro, speaking from Duhok in the Kurdistan Region, added that he will not give up his work and he will go back to Rojava even if it means risking death.

“I thank Mr. President [Barzani] and everyone who welcomed us,” he said, “But I promise that we will go back to Rojava and continue our work there.”

The Kurdish political movement, he added, has been working against the “Syrian regime for more than 50 years. And it is impossible for the people of Syria to accept another dictatorship.”
