ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The United States army said on Friday that it had killed a suspected member of the Islamic State (ISIS) in eastern Syria who was planning an attack on global coalition forces.

“On Wednesday, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) Forces killed an ISIS attack cell member in a strike in Eastern Syria. The individual was in the midst of planting an IED for a planned attack against Coalition and Partner Forces,” CENTCOM said in a post on X without disclosing the exact location of the operation.

The US-led global coalition against ISIS was formed in 2014 after the radical group took over swathes of Syrian and Iraqi territory. ISIS was territorially defeated in both countries by 2019. However, the group continues to pose a serious security risk through hit-and-run attacks, bombings, and abductions.

ISIS rarely attacks coalition troops in Syria, but it does target local forces.

The Washington-backed Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) frequently carries out operations against ISIS in areas of northeast Syria that it controls. On Monday, it announced the capture of two ISIS suspects in Hasaka province. The operation was carried out in cooperation with the global coalition.
