Another Iraqi killed in Syria’s al-Hol camp: local media

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Another Iraqi was found dead in northeast Syria’s al-Hol camp on Wednesday, according to a local media outlet. 

Internal Security Forces (Asayish) found the body of Adnan Hameed, 27, in the second section of the camp, a military source told North Press Agency. He was shot in the head by unknown assailants.

This is the fifth murder in the camp since a large security operation last month by Asayish and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), according to the media outlet. The operation, launched in late March, targeted Islamic State (ISIS) sleeper cells after a spate of murders. More than 150 people were arrested. 

Many of the murder victims in al-Hol have been Iraqis. The body of another Iraqi was found in the camp on Sunday.

There were 16 deaths in the camp in March, but only one in April after the security operation, according to the Rojava Information Center. 

Al-Hol is home to around 61,000 people, mostly women and children with suspected links to ISIS militants. Nearly half the camp’s residents are Iraqis, according to data provided to Rudaw English by Sheikhmus Ahmed, who supervises the administration of Rojava’s IDP and refugee camps.
