Rojava decides to raise Syria’s new flag

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Kurdish administration in northeast Syria (Rojava) decided on Thursday to raise the new flag of the country, previously used by the opposition, across its institutions following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime. 

“On the occasion of the victory of the Syrian people’s will and the overthrow of the repressive regime, the Democratic Peoples’ Council has decided to raise the flag of independence over all institutions of the Democratic Autonomous Administration in the North and East Syria [DAANES], reaffirming Syria’s unity and national identity,” said the Kurdish administration in a post on X.

The flag, featuring three red stars and the colors green, white, and black, has been used by various opposition groups fighting against Assad’s oppressive regime.

Syria’s civil war dramatically reignited late last month when a coalition of rebels led by the Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) launched a blistering offensive against the Syrian army, seizing the northern cities of Aleppo, Hama, and Homs, and ultimately capturing the capital Damascus as rebels said Assad fled the country, ending over five decades of Baathist rule.

So far, the HTS-led forces have not clashed with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) - de facto army of Rojava. 

The new Syrian flag has yet to be officially recognized as the country is going through a transitional period. 

The previous flag, featuring two green stars and the colors of red, white and black, used to be raised in some parts of Rojava where the regime institutions were present - commonly known as security squares.
