HASAKA, Syria – Displaced families are marking a somber Ramadan this year in Washukanni camp in northeast Syria’s Hasaka province.

Due to the coronavirus lockdown, residents had been unable to leave their shelters to earn a living or buy supplies.

Now, as the lockdown measures are relaxed, residents have reemerged.

In the absence of assistance from international aid agencies, poverty has forced many residents to send their children into the streets to work.

The camp is home to around 6,000 people who fled their homes in Tal Abyad north of Raqqa and Ras al-Ain north of Hasaka last October when Turkey launched Operation Peace Spring.

This is their first Ramadan under canvass since the offensive forced them into displacement.
