ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - An ineffective rocket targeted a position of the global coalition against the Islamic State (ISIS) in Syria on Monday, amid a spike in offensives between the US-led forces and Iran-backed armed groups in the area.
The attack targeted an outpost of the coalition in northeast Syria (Rojava), with one rocket found in the vicinity of the camp, and a second rocket found at the point of the origin of the attack, according to a statement from the United States Central Command (CENTCOM).
The attack did not result in any material or immaterial damages, CENTCOM added.
The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) also reported earlier in the day that the coalition forces had shot down a drone in Deir ez-Zor, likely belonging to Iranian militias.
A US contractor was killed and six others were injured when a drone strike targeted a coalition base near northeast Syria's Hasaka city on March 23. The drone was of Iranian origin, according to the Pentagon.
In retaliation, American forces launched airstrikes against groups affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) based in eastern Syria, killing at least eight pro-Iran militants.
About a thousand US troops stationed in Syria are part of an international coalition that has fought alongside the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) against ISIS.
Attacks on US forces in Syria are often attributed to Iran-backed militias and factions, but have never been claimed.
Tit-for-tat attacks between the US and Iran playing out in Iraq and Syria have decreased over the past year.
