ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A Rudaw team in Qamishli, northeast Syria (Rojava) was attacked by an unknown group while covering a suspected Turkish drone attack on Tuesday, the head of Rudaw’s office in Rojava, Fahd Sabri, has confirmed.
Sabri told Rudaw English that his team of three were approached by a group of strangers upon arriving at the al-Hilaliya neighborhood in Qamishli, which they had travelled to in order to cover the targeting of the vehicle which killed three people by a Turkish drone earlier that day.
Female reporter Viviyan Fetah was pushed by the as-yet unidentified group and, although unharmed, Rudaw cameraman Ara Bijo had his camera and live-coverage equipment taken from him by force. Sabri was punched by the group, which he told Rudaw numbered around seven people.
Following the incident, Sabri visited local security forces (Asayish) twice in order to recover their stolen equipment, but has been told to return again on Wednesday.
This is the seventh attack on the Rudaw office in Rojava, with the previous one occurring on September 28 when two people threw Molotov cocktails into the building. At the time, Rudaw Media Network said in a statement that the first five attacks were carried out by the Revolutionary Youth Movement, an organization affiliated to the ruling Democratic Union Party (PYD).
