ISIS chemical weapons attack on Syrian air field
LONDON – Islamic State (ISIS) militants attacked a Syrian military airbase in Deir Ezzor province with poison gas, wounding soldiers who suffered breathing problems, Russia’s official Ria-Novosti news agency reported, citing a military source.
It quoted the unidentified source as saying that the militants lobbed shells loaded with a “poisonous chemical substance” at the base, after an earlier assault there was foiled by air raids.
It added that “a number of soldiers were choking” after the attack.
If confirmed, this would not be the first time that ISIS has used chemical weapons in Syria and Iraq.
Kirkuk Governor Najmuddin Karim said last month that ISIS had used chemical weapons on the Turkmen Shiite village of Taza in northern Iraq.
Last February, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) confirmed reports that ISIS had been using chemical weapons against Kurdish Peshmerga forces in Iraq throughout 2015.
It said in October that ISIS had deployed mustard gas in the town of Marea, near Aleppo, reporting that the death of a baby there was “very likely” from the poison gas.
