Rojava postpones final round of elections
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – The self-autonomous Rojava region in northern Syria has postponed the third stage of elections that were due to be held this month.
Elections for the Peoples’ Parliament and the Peoples’ Congress were planned for January, but have been postponed as the electoral commission needs more time to prepare.
The High Council of Elections made the decision to postpone the votes “due to time constraints,” the council announced in a statement released after meeting on Thursday.
This is the third round of the first elections held in the self-autonomous Democratic Federal System of Northern Syria, commonly known as Rojava.
Local commune elections were held on September 22.
Council elections were delayed. They had been originally scheduled for November 3, but took place on December 1.
That delay coupled with time constraints have led to the decision to push the parliamentary elections back, the election council stated.
A new date has not yet been set.
The main opposition, the Kurdistan National Council (ENKS), boycotted the elections.
The Syrian regime does not recognize the Kurdish enclave or the elections.
