ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — A military officer opened fire on Kobani canton’s agricultural minister, Mahmud Bozani, in a vehicle at a checkpoint in the Kurdish controlled Rojava region of Syria, reportedly injuring two members of Bozani’s family Friday.

Rudaw has learned that the assailant is a member of the Kobani canton security forces, was later arrested and is currently under police investigation.

Bozani, who previously was the minister of economy, told Rudaw that his wife and daughter were severely injured and immediately transferred to a hospital in the Turkish town of Suruc, and later transferred to Sanliurfa Central Hospital.

“My wife and daughter’s health conditions are critical, they are in surgery,” he said, without commenting on the motive of the assailant.

Bozani is a member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Syria, which is a member of the managerial committee to run Kobani canton. Kobani canton was declared autonomous in January 2014, and since then, it has been administered by the interim government of the Kurdish Supreme Committee.

The town of Kobani is the center of the canton, which was the scene of months of fierce battles between Kurdish groups and the Islamic State.
