ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Siud Mala resigned on Friday from his position as leader of the main opposition group in northeast Syria (Rojava), days after a video of him went viral on social media.

Mala headed the Kurdish National Council (ENKS), an umbrella organization of several political parties, including the Kurdistan Democratic Party - Syria (PDK-S).

In a statement on Friday, Mala said he had been “subjected to a vile conspiracy” targeting him and his party. He announced his resignation as the head of ENKS and PDK-S “in order to preserve the party, the council and their supporters,” but pledged to “remain loyal” to his party.

A senior member of PDK-S confirmed Mala’s resignation to Rudaw English, adding that it was in reaction to a social media campaign against the politician.

A video was posted on social media last week purportedly showing Mala speaking to a woman and using a seductive tone.

ENKS is expected to publish a statement on their leader’s resignation later on Saturday, Rudaw has learnt.
