SDF advance 8km against ISIS in Deir ez-Zor

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – The SDF advanced more than eight kilometres in what they say is the final phase of their operation against ISIS in eastern Syria, near the Iraqi border.

The SDF, with the global anti-ISIS coalition advanced on the al-Baghuz axis, announced Kino Gabriel, spokesperson for the force, on Thursday evening.

Al-Baghuz is located on the Euphrates River near the Iraqi border in Deir ez-Zor province. It is one of a string of villages and towns along the river, the largest of which is Hajin.

Clashes “continue at a violent pace” along the eastern bank of the Euphrates, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported on Thursday.

Coalition warplanes struck the area, in addition to artillery shelling, the UK-based conflict monitor added, saying that casualties occurred on both sides.

On Tuesday, the SDF announced the final phase of its operations against ISIS in eastern Deir ez-Zor province.
