Kurdish forces in Syria say Hasaka city is liberated
HASAKA, Syria – Kurdish forces in Syria said Sunday they have complete control of the city of Hasaka in the northeast of the country following an offensive against the Islamic State (ISIS) group that lasted more than a month.
The Peoples’ Protection Units (YPG) said its forces, plus the group’s YPJ women’s wing, had killed 386 ISIS militants during the offensives.
“During the operation 386 ISIS militants were killed and the bodies of 117 were seized by YPG fighters. A number of ISIS leaders were also killed in the fight,” said Azima Deniz, a commander of the YPJ.
Hasaka’s ISIS ruler, his assistant and the mayor of Dair al-Zur were also killed during the military operations.
The Kurdish fighters seized large quantities of weapons and ammunitions from the radical group.
ISIS attacked Hasaka on June 24 and occupied several neighborhoods within two days.
The fight for Hasaka was backed by coalition airstrikes, and 21 YPG fighters had lost their lives in the battles, according to the Kurdish force.
