ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Islamic State (ISIS) gunmen on Sunday killed four Syrian regime officers in a desert attack in central Syria, a war monitor reported, with an ongoing sweeping operation by Damascus failing to curb jihadist attacks.

“Three officers of different ranks were killed in an attack launched by Islamic State members on a military position belonging to regime forces in Jubb al-Jarrah in the eastern Homs countryside,” said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a Britain-based war monitor.

Another regime officer had also lost his life in the attack, bringing the total number of fatalities to four.

Damascus, with Russian air support, has been carrying out an expansive sweeping operation in areas where ISIS remains active, with a recent rise in deadly jihadist attacks killing many Syrian government as well as pro-regime soldiers.

ISIS rose to power and seized swathes of Iraqi and Syrian land in a brazen offensive in 2014, declaring a so-called “caliphate”.

While the group was declared territorially defeated in Syria in 2019, it still continues to pose serious security risks through hit-and-run attacks, bombings, and abductions, especially across the vast desert.

Last week, at least two Syrian regime and pro-regime fighters were killed in a similar ISIS desert attack in Homs.

In June, at least 19 Syrian regime soldiers were killed in separate deadly ISIS attacks in the Homs desert.
