Mastermind of 2016 ISIS attack on Qamishli killed in special op: YPG
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Kurdish forces in northern Syrian announced they have killed an ISIS commander who had masterminded a deadly suicide attack on the city of Qamishli in July 2016.
Hisen Ayid el-Bilebil Ebu el-Walid was “killed in a special operation after being followed closely for months by YPG Anti-Terror Units,” the Kurdish armed group YPG stated on Monday.
Fifty-eight people were killed and over 150 wounded in a massive double bombing in the Kurdish city of Qamishli in Rojava, northern Syria in July 2016. The second explosion occurred as people rushed to the scene of a truck bombing.
According to the YPG, Walid was a member of the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra until he joined ISIS in 2013. He held top commander positions in Hasakah, Raqqa, and Cizre and “planned and ordered” the attack on Qamishli.
He was under YPG surveillance and was killed in a special operation in Buseyra village, Deir ez-Zor province.
